Take the time to at least remove them so that they are out of the photo shot

Take a selfie in the bathroom mirror. This is 2014, you should be able to take a picture of yourself without the use of a bathroom mirror

Turn your phone around and practice. Everyone has a smartphone that is able to flip the camera to face you, ie - facetime like
Don't:
Take your selfie while aiming up your nose
Do:
Try to take your selfie straight on, or at least angle your face
